“Victor Brauner’s Visionary Art in an Outstanding Collection”, a lecture by Camille Morando

According to Victor Brauner, his eye injury and the war were the two defining events of his life, foreshadowed in works described as prophetic: on the one hand, the enucleation he had painted seven years earlier in his Self-Portrait (1931), an “objective chance” according to the Surrealists, or a coincidence; and, on the other hand, the omen of the years of barbarism in Europe brought about by totalitarian regimes. Subsequently, Brauner would undergo ceaseless metamorphoses in order to transcend reality. Indeed, it is through his creative process that the artist experiences that which transcends understanding. By drawing upon archaic civilisations and invisible worlds, he invents his own language and new perspectives, as demonstrated by the exhibition of this exceptional private collection at the New National Museum of Monaco, which showcases the artist’s visionary, magical and obsessive art.

Camille Morando is the curator of the exhibition “Victor Brauner, The Magical Adventure”. She holds a PhD in art history, is head of documentation for the modern collections at the MNAM-CCI/Centre Pompidou, and is a lecturer at the École du Louvre.
